Common Questions

Everything you need to know about OSHC

Is OSHC mandatory for international students?
Yes. The Australian Government requires all international students on a student visa (subclass 500) to maintain OSHC for the entire duration of their stay. You must show proof of OSHC when applying for your visa.
Can I switch OSHC providers after arriving in Australia?
Yes. You can switch providers at any time. Check your current policy for any cancellation terms or refund eligibility, and ensure there is no gap in your cover when switching.
What's the difference between OSHC single, couple, and family cover?
Single covers one student. Couple covers the student plus a partner (spouse/de facto). Family covers the student, partner, and dependent children under 18. Each tier has different premium rates.
Does OSHC cover pre-existing conditions?
There is a mandatory 12-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions (conditions you had before arriving in Australia). This applies to all OSHC providers per government regulation.
What does OSHC NOT cover?
OSHC generally does not cover: dental (unless you have extras), optical, physiotherapy, elective/cosmetic surgery, IVF and assisted reproductive services, and treatments not medically necessary. Check your policy PDS for full exclusions.
How do I make a claim with OSHC?
Most providers offer digital claims through their app or website. At direct-billing clinics, the provider bills your insurer directly — you just pay any gap. For other services, you pay upfront and submit a receipt for reimbursement.
